BIO John Butler
I have been passionate about photography since a child.
Capturing images has always been important to me.
My first influence would have been the civil war picture by Mathew Brady. Those terrible images were beautiful in their truth and meaning. The power of photography hit me then. Since then I have learned to make beautiful and powerful images of many different subjects. My technical experiences comes from many sources. I learned darkroom techniques first at the University of Hartford under Ellen Carey. There I was introduced to art photography and studied with John Coplans and learned about fine art and graduated with an associate of arts degree. From there I went to the University of Colorado at BOulder and studied mass communications and philosophy, directed at photojournalism. A broader understanding of aesthetics and value were learned, that gave me a bigger picture perspective. Then to fine tune all that I learned, I enrolled at the Maine Photographic Workshops, in Rockport, Maine, as a part of the University of Maine at Augusta, where I received an associates degree in Photography. There my skills were fine tuned and my vision expanded. I learned my own style and technique. My technical skills became second nature and became free to express the world in a unique way. There I worked and met with many great photographers, such as Fred Schrieber and Paul Caponigro, whose comfortable and delicate approach helped me see the beauty in all things. Tillman Crane really helped me develop and fine tune my eye and technical skills.
Throughout the years I have photographed many events, activities and scenes. I have done many portraits, weddings, graduations and gala events. I photographed for American Skiing Company and Sunday River Skiway for several years, and learned corporate and mass production. I have photographed from sailing documentaries to local gymnastics meets. Equestrian events to musical concerts. I am an active outdoorsman and am involved deeply with skiing, sailing, rock climbing, hunting, fishing, hiking, baseball, and many others. Whatever your needs may be, I tailor my services to meet your requirements completely and professionally.
